April 7, Monday- On this day in history: In 1798, The Mississippi territory was organized from disputed territory claimed by both the United States and Spain. It was expanded in 1804 and again in 1812. The original Mississippi territory included what is now Alabama, and 9 months before Mississippi was admitted to the Union , the Alabama territory to the East was separated out. On December 10, 1817 Mississippi was admitted to the Union as the 20th state: In 1827, John Walker, an English chemist, sold the first friction match that he had invented: In 1927, The first distant public television broadcast ( from Washington D.C. to New York City) displayed the image of Commerce Secretary Herbert Hoover: In 1939, World War II- Italy invaded Albania: In 1955, Winston Churchill resigned as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom amid indications of poor health. He served as Prime Minister twice ( 1940-1945 and 1951-1955). He is the only British Prime Minister to have won the Nobel Prize in literature and was the first person to be made an honorary citizen of the United States. His mother, Jennie Jerome, an American socialite, was born in Brooklyn, New York: In 2003, United States troops captured Baghdad; Saddam Hosseins regime fell two days later.
