April Meeting Notice - Southern Florida Chapter Explorers Club Date: SATURDAY, April 26, 2014 Venue: Home of Jack Grove,Tavenier, FL Time: 3 PM Speaker: Jack Grove, PhD, FN ‘96 Title: “Anchors and Atolls” Join us on Saturday, April 26 for a very special gathering - an afternoon in the Florida Keys with Jack Grove. Jack Grove, Ph.D., FN ’96, is a leading authority on the fishes and marine environments of the eastern tropical Pacific. For seven years he lived in the Galápagos, where he carried out extensive marine biological studies. In 1997, his comprehensive volume “The Fishes of the Galápagos Islands” was published and in that same year, he received his Ph.D. from Pacific Western University. A true adventurer and Fellow of The Explorers Club, Jack has led numerous expeditions to the remote corners of the world, participating in polar expeditions as a marine naturalist, photographer, and expedition leader, as well as working with noted scientists and explorers, such as Jean-Michel Cousteau. Jack is an avid scuba diver, certified dive master, and dedicated conservationist. In 2002, he was one of 57 scientists invited by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) to participate in a conference in Hanoi to discuss a strategy for the preservation of marine biodiversity. When not traveling, he manages his own photography business in the Florida Keys. The list of destinations his photographs have captured is exhausting, and ranges from the North Pole to Antarctica. Jack has been featured in television and news interviews that span the globe, from the Gibraltar Broadcast Corporation to Marlin Perkins’s Wild Kingdom and, ABC News Day One with Forest Sawyer. The BBC named Jack underwater photographer of the year in 1990. Jack lives in the Florida Keys, as close to a living coral reef as he could get anywhere in the continental US. Join us at Jack’s home in Taverier, Florida Keys for an afternoon of genial atmosphere and a presentation of one of Jack’s favorite subjects – Pacific atolls. His talk will cover: • Discovery of a ship wreck in the Pitcairn Island Group • Overview of 12 expeditions across the tropical Pacific since 1984 • Pitcairn Island and the Mutineers of the HMS Bounty • The 1998 discovery of the wreck of the Acadia, which disappeared in 1890 • The 1999 salvage of the main anchor of the Acadia and the connection to the Christian family on Pitcairn • Ocean currents of the Pacific • Formation of atolls • Status of coral reefs globally Where: Home of Jack Grove - Tavenier, FL Directions: Take US1 South from Homestead to the Florida Keys. Peace Avenue is approximately 34 miles from Homestead. Tavenier is south of Key Largo. Turn left onto Peace Avenue which is just past Sunset Gardens Drive. 166 Peace Avenue is the last house on the right. If you see Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center on your right, you have gone too far. If you reach Camelot Drive, youve gone about 0.7 miles too far. Turn around and turn right on Peace Avenue. When: 3 PM, Saturday April 26 Please arrive at Jack’s home at 3 PM for the social hour and relax on the deck overlooking Dove Creek and the mangrove forests. His home is filled with photographs from his research and artifacts from his travels. A sumptuous paella dinner will be served at 4 PM with the presentation afterwards at 5 PM. We had this paella at last years event in Key Largo we just had to have them back again. We guarantee it is as good as any in Spain.
