Apropos of very little, I sometimes have the fantasy of packing a bag, loading it and the dogs in the car, and taking off to live somewhere incredibly rural. Get a job at a small mental health center. Keep to myself. Simplify. Read. Watch the billion DVDs Ive amassed for no good reason. But then I think of Christine McVie--the singer/songwriter/sane heart of Fleetwood Mac. In 1998, believing herself tired of life on the road and of fame and its trappings, she bought a farm in rural Kent, UK, and left it all behind. Problem was: she wasnt really a keep-to-herself, out-of-the-light kinda gal and within 15 years, she was utterly miserable. So, shes back on tour at 71 and reportedly happier than ever. The point is: escape may seem very attractive. A design for living may be far more rewarding.
