Arab League Hails Qatari Efforts gulf-times | March 11, 2014 The Arab League’s Ministerial Council has welcomed Qatari mediation aimed at ending the dispute between Djibouti and Eritrea through peaceful means and restoring the situation in the Ras Doumeira area and the Doumeira island to what it was in before February 4, 2008. In a decision released at the end of its 141st session, the Ministerial Council welcomed the agreement signed between Djibouti and Eritrea on June 6, 2010 under the auspices of the State of Qatar. The council also backed the agreement’s implementation to address all issues and normalise relations between the two countries, hoping to see a positive impact on the situation in the Horn African region in general. The council also urged the two sides to implement the agreement’s provisions which mandate Qatar to put an end to the crisis that erupted in February 2008 in the Ras Doumeira area and to free captives. The Ministerial Council welcomed the joint communique issued by the Arab League and African Union’s Peace and Security Council on December 19, 2010 on the dispute between Djibouti and Eretria and asked the Arab League secretary general to follow up the developments in line with Qatari mediation to submit a report to the upcoming Ministerial Council’s meeting. The Ministerial Council also praised Qatar’s efforts in establishing peace and stability in Sudan. It welcomed the signing of a peace agreement between the Sudanese government and the Justice and Equality Movement in Doha on April 6, 2013. The council called on other rebel groups in Sudan to join the agreement, the last of which was the Doha Document for Peace in 2011. The council called on Arab countries to communicate with the international community and the UN in order to prevent any funding of such groups.
