Arabic #Calligraphy Illuminated Ottoman Qur’an Mecca 1259 AH (1843 CE) Ink, opaque watercolours and gold on paper MS.786.2011 (not on display) Qur’ans like this were made during the 19th century and bore gold double frontispieces with small cartouches representing Mecca and Medina, with decoration in the rococo style (with blue and pink stylized vegetation). This Qur’an is particularly unusual, first because of its small format, and second because the colophon is signed and dated by two women: a copyist named Fatima bint Abdullah, and the illuminator Manal Kucuk. It is quite rare to find the names of women involved in the production of manuscripts. Learn the beautiful art of Arabic Calligraphy here at MIA.
