Arc to Arcturus and drive a spike to Spica… Do you want to do some science but don’t have any “science stuff”? Try a little stargazing... 1. Find the Big Dipper—look overhead for a group of stars that looks like a squared off pot with a curved handle. That’s the Big Dipper. 2. Now, follow the curve or “arc” of the Dipper’s handle for about two times its length. You should see a star that looks faintly orange-ish. That’s Arcturus, the brightest star in the kite-shaped constellation Bootes. 3. Continue to follow the curve until you reach a bright blue-white star. That’s Spica, the brightest star in the constellation Virgo. You arced to Arcturus and drive a spike to Spica! Did you enjoy your trip through the stars? If so, here’s a link you might like: kidsastronomy/astroskymap/constellations.htm Don’t forget, this year’s Summer Reading Program, Fizz, Boom, Read! is all about science fun. Sign up. Read som!e books. Get stickers and Book Bucks to trade for prizes. Attend the great programs. Registration is now open for the Marshmallow Challenge, being held July 1st. The following week is the big opening gala “Fire and Ice” presented by Mad Science of the Mid-Hudson. So sign up today at westnyacklib.org and join the fun!
