Archies post-election summary: -most of the analysis youll have read in the press is bollocks. -the UKIP earthquake is bollocks. Turnout was about 36%, meaning only about 12% of the public actually voted for them. -this all has almost zero implications for the next general election. Turnout is different, voting system is different, voting patterns are different, etc. (e.g. Labour havent won a European Parliament election in twenty years) -European far-right seismic shift is bollocks. Theres been a small shift (about 8%) from cente-right to far-right parties across Europe, but otherwise very littles changed. -none of this is evidence that the country (or Europe) is suddenly overflowing with racists. As mentioned, UKIP didnt actually get that much support, and of the support they did get, theres quite a number of different reasons for it rather than just xenophobia. -most of the UKIP hype is just journalists trying to sell papers and right on middle-class liberals wanting to feel smug (hello). -UKIP are really a fairly insignificant diversion. The centre-right across Europe (arguably even including Labour) are a much more real, significant and immediate threat. UKIP are at most a potential hazard, but the mainstream right have been doing and are continuing to do extremely serious and lasting harm across the country and across Europe. Please dont let your actions or words against the easy target of UKIP allow you to become smug and complacent. They are a side-show. They are not the real danger.
