Arctic cold holds an icy grip on U.S. Northeast - A weak wave of low pressure forms along the arctic front spinning up some snow and rain from northern Virginia to New England overnight and early Friday. - All rain, mixing with snow is likely from northern Virginia to Long Island, Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. - All snow falls from the Pocono Mountains of northeast Pennsylvania through central and eastern Maine. - Rain changes to wet snow before ending from east-central Pennsylvania to southeast Massachusetts, eastern New Hampshire and coastal Maine. - Snow accumulations of a half inch to 4 inches, mainly on grassy surfaces, are possible from the Pocono Mountains northeast to coastal Maine. - Boston will see snow early Friday, around 1 of accumulation is likely, locally 2-3 in the western suburbs. - The heaviest totals are likely in the higher elevations. - Lake-effect snow showers and squalls fly in the favored areas of western New York, western Pennsylvania and the mountains of West Virginia. - Snowfall amounts tonight of 1 to 4 inches should be common with high spots of 4 to 8 inches east of Lake Ontario and southeast of Lake Erie. - Lake-effect snow showers lessen off Lake Erie Friday, while the band of Lake Ontario shifts southward toward Syracuse. - Highs Friday mainly 30s with low to mid 40s near the coast. - Arctic air keeps temps below average through the weekend with a reinforcing shot of cold air for early next week. West - A winter storm pushes from the Pacific Northwest through the Intermountain West Friday into Saturday. - Rain is likely from northern California northward to western Oregon and in the valleys of central Nevada and central Utah. - However, the arctic air mass has invaded areas from northwest and interior Oregon to the Colorado Rockies. - When the moisture hits that cold air snow and ice are the result. - For the Willamette Valley of northwest Oregon the precipitation likely will fall as a mixture of snow/sleet and freezing rain tonight with a slow transition to mainly rain by Friday Morning. - Snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches are possible before the change to ice this evening. - Ice accretions of 1/10 to 1/4 inches could occur before the change to rain later tonight. - Another area that may go through the snow to ice to possibly rain transition is the valley areas east of the Cascades in Oregon. - Snow is likely to last longer there so accumulations of 4 to 12 inches are possible. - Snow accumulations from central Oregon and southern Washington to the Colorado Rockies range from 1 to 6 inches in the valleys to 8 to 14 inches in the mountains. - Lows tonight will range from the upper 20s western Washington and northwest Oregon to 30s and 40s farther south. Lows 5 to 10 below zero over much of Montana. Lows single digits eastern Colorado and more moderate low in the 50s to near 60 in the southwest Deserts. - Highs Friday teens northern Rockies into most of Montana. Mainly 70s in the Desert Southwest. Warmer highs in the 30s for Denver Friday. Midwest - Lake-effect snow showers and snow squalls continue tonight in northern and western Michigan, extreme northern Wisconsin and northwest Indiana. - Snow flurries from Minnesota and Iowa into northern Illinois should wind down overnight. - Overnight another 1 to 3 inches should be common with 3 to 5 inches in persistent Lake Effect snow bands in Michigan. - Lake-effect continues Friday, but there should be fewer bands. - Lows tonight single digits to around zero far north to low 20s eastern and southern sections. - Highs Friday mainly 20s and Thursday. - A winter storm spreads snow into the central Plains and MS Valley on Saturday. - A general 1-3 snow will fall for much of Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri, locally 3-5+ along the I-70 corridor in KS and MO, including around Kansas City. - Light snows spreads to the Great Lakes Saturday night and Sunday, including Chicago with light accumulations possible. South - Most of the region, outside of central and south Florida is feeling the bone chilling arctic air tonight and Friday. - Frost and freeze warning over much of the region tonight including the Florida Panhandle. - A few showers eastern North Carolina tonight. Otherwise most of the region will be dry through Friday. - Lows tonight 20s northern sections. Lows 40s near the Southeast Coast. Mid 60s by the time you reach Miami. - Highs Friday 40s and 50s, 70s and 80s by the time you get south of the central Florida Peninsula. - Some light rain, sleet and snow may spread into northern Oklahoma and northern Arkansas on Saturday. - A cold rain blossoms for the lower MS Valley and Southeast on Sunday with some wintry mix possible in the Tennessee Valley. - A reinforcing shot of colder air returns to the region late Monday and Tuesday.
