Are any of these variations in depictation of Ganesha objectionable, offending to anyones senses? Why is it only MF Husseins paintings drew flak? It is because his aim was to abuse, ridicule, and denigrate, and disguise it as art and take cover under the pretext of freedom of artistic expression. It is only stupid not to be able to see through this. The difference was in intention. While I still do not approve of violent expressions of protest and externment petitions, the intelligent and articulate among us would do well to show perspicacity in pointing out that MFH was taking advantage of the immunity provided by his status to subtly attack religious symbols of Hindus (since he conspicuously never used symbols of any other religion, certainly not his own). It was not only in bad taste but deliberate and malafide and deserved to be severely criticised instead of celebrated as liberal duds did, all the more, since the fame and stature (many connoisseurs would say, exaggerated and not entirely deserved) afforded to him by this culture demanded that he demonstrated responsibility and sensitivity.
