Are prophecies needed today in our current day and time? Mariano Rios asked: Are prophecies needed today in our current day and time? Hi Mariano, First off, the Bible teaches that prophecy is the word of God (Revelation 19:10, 2 Peter 1:20). Therefore, prophecies like the ones found through out the Bible, which spoke of future events and gave revelation of Jesus Christ, is no longer available nor necessary in our day. This is the reason we were instructed by God not to add nor take way from the prophecy which has already been written (Revelation 22:18-19). Since the Bible (the word of God) has already been completed, if anyone in our day were to truly give a prophecy that came from the Holy Spirit, giving information about a future event or a new revelation, the words of the speaker would have to somehow appear within the Bible. If not, then Paul would be wrong in telling us to test prophecies through the word of God (1 Corinthians 14:29, 1 Thessalonians 5:21). Logically speaking, someone giving you a prophecy using specific dates or times, or telling you about things that God is supposedly going to give you (a new house, a car, money...), does not only fail our instructions of testing prophecy through the Bible, but also prohibits Jesus Christ from returning until the prophecy is fulfilled. This is a direct contradiction to Matthew 24:36, which states that no man knows the hour of Christs coming (since one can argue that God is guaranteed not to return until after his individual prophecy is fulfilled). On that same point, the prophecies given in the Bible (the gift of prophecy) were not about promising people material wealth or to tell people what to do in the future. Instead, James teaches that we are not to worry about what is to happen tomorrow (James 4:13-17). Jesus also makes plain and simple that tomorrow is not an issue to worry about, instead we are to get through today (Matthew 6:34). Finally, Paul takes it further in 1 Corinthians 13:8, in his statement about love remaining while prophecies were to cease. In conclusion, the future of the Saints has already been revealed. Saints will be participants of the resurrection, and the new heavens and earth. The Bible already explains all the promises that God has in store for us, and there is no revelation that can be prophesied to us that is better than that (Ephesians 1:4-8). If in doubt, the way to know if a prophesy is from God or not, is simply if the prophecy fulfills (Deuteronomy 18:22). According to Paul, prophecies are for exhortation and to build up the members in the church (1 Corinthians 14:3). Nevertheless, if the prophecy cannot be tested through scripture or can point you to scripture, then we should not accept it as the Word of God. God bless you and peace be with you. Note: Here is a video that shows what happens when people do not test things like prophecy through the Bible (This is what Peter Popoff calls the gift of prophecy and word of knowledge). Please note these videos posted here is not to degrade anyone, but rather to show the general public proof of what we speak of. Peter Popoff uses an ear receiver, as his wife reads him prayer card collected in the beginning of the service. Magician and Scientist James Randi uses a frequency device to catch frequencies in the air. This is what he got. Randi being a magician knew of the technique used by Popoff, due to an ear receiver used in the magic community called the whisper 2000. A device used in divination tricks.
