Are we fuc$ed? I had lunch with someone today in their late 50s. We were talking about the world and where its going. To quickly paraphrase his position: -There has been a systematic destruction of the family and family values in our society. -Its not that people wanted minority groups included in the definition of family - rather that family as an institution itself has been obliterated. -We are now left with a void where there was once the institution of family. -Roles that had been established over hundreds of generations have been ripped away, marginalized or abandoned. -There are very few credible role models celebrated by the media. Behaviour and expectation norms are all over the place. -No ones knows what they truly want because there is no established value to fit into anymore. Establishing new societal norms that we can all buy into will take generations. -This attack on family was not a gender liberation issue. People have largely been able to do whatever they want since after WW2 in terms of education and career. -As a result of all this upheaval people are for the most part miserable. What do you think on his take?
