Are you aware of a 29 year old young lady named Brittany Maynard? Shes been in the news quite a bit lately. Miss Maynard is being portrayed as very heroic, because after being diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor, rather than die of the disease she has chosen to take her own life on November 1st. Maybe in some ways she is heroic but sadly shes also very misguided. Unfortunately, Brittany Maynard believes she is in control of her own destiny. The Israelites believed the same thing after their escape from Egypt. As they were wandering in the desert, Moses took them through a place named the “wilderness of sin” (Exodus 16:1). Commentators have described it as 24,000 square miles of nothingness. The Israelites grumbled at Moses (saying they would rather die than be in the desert) because they had no food or water. They actually wished they had remained in captivity as slaves to the Egyptians, where they were at least able to eat and drink. But ultimately they werent grumbling at Moses... they were grumbling at God. In other words, like Brittany Maynard, they wanted to choose death over their current circumstances. Yet, God had taken them there for a purpose... He answered their grumblings by giving them manna to eat every morning and quails every evening. The only caveat was they couldnt save any of it to eat the next day. God was showing them that He would provide all that was needed no matter what the circumstances. Even circumstances of life and death. And God is telling us the same thing today. The reality is our life is not for us to take. Deuteronomy 32:39 says, See now that I myself am he! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand.” I have no idea how it feels to face death after being diagnosed with a terminal disease... but I do know that we are all dead in our sins until God redeems us and makes us alive again. And that is what I wish Brittany Maynard would realize. That her “body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” (1 Corinthians 6: 19-20) There is still time for our prayers to change the course of events in Miss Maynards life. For God to impress upon her that dying well is not meant for ourselves but to show those around us that our life had purpose. That every day we wake up is an indication that God is not done with us. He still has plans and purposes for us. If she continues down her current path of hopelessness then Satan wins and the world becomes a darker place. Would you pray with me each day that God intervenes and gives Brittany the same hope that the hymnist wrote of below: My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus name. On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand;
