Are you better now? It is a question that sucks the air from my lungs. I want to shout, NO! Year two without Ana is far worse than year one. How could looking at Isaiah playing in the yard alone ever not be hard? At the news of every subsequent shooting- our prayers are with the families that are waiting to hear. And we work to keep people remembering... We were having an especially challenging week recently when we happened to open a package of letters from Chamberlain Elementary School in New Britain, CT. They were colorful, life affirming letters of what love wins meant to those students. Similar letters have come from every state in the nation. Thank you teachers for affirming LOVE WINS in your classrooms! Thank you to the hundreds of parents we have heard from who have personally expressed how they teach this concept in their homes through acts of kindness and compassion. Ultimately, it is what we teach our children that will ever really matter... I heard Isaiah noodling at the piano recently, picking out chords of a song I was listening to on repeat play. We sat down at the piano and learned it...a quartet with one member in heaven. Ana would have loved to sing this song with her brother. The song: My Life is in Your Hands by Kirk Franklin, has helped us all in this season of grieving. Today, I remember Ana...and I write to my son. Sweet, darling boy- Did you know that you are more than the apple of our eye? You are an entire home made apple pie with whipped cream on top and ice cream on the side. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. Dig deep for faith...and understand that digging deep for faith sometimes means being afraid, having doubt and facing seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Isaiah, digging deep means knowing that God will sustain you in those times. We pray we can model perseverance through adversity. We will do as much as we can to prevent acts like the one that ripped your sister from your side at the piano. We pray you feel just how much you are loved...from the top of your head to the bottom of your slightly Cape Cod vinegar chip smelling, beautiful brown toes... We are singing (loudly and slightly out of tune!) with you and for you - until we are all reunited again! :) I know that I can make it. I know that I can stand. No matter what may come my way- my life is in Your hands. Love Wins, Mami and Daddy
