Are you concerned that someone you know may be suffering from dementia? Is dementia affecting your life? Yesterday I met the Alzheimers Society to talk about local services for those who are suffering from various forms of dementia. This year approximately 34,000 people are suffering from dementia in the North East. There are estimated to be 1,186 people living with dementia in the Redcar constituency and too many people are still not living well with the condition. We have a diagnosis rate here of 54% which is higher than the national average, but is still far too low. On the day I met the Alzheimers Society it was announced that GPs are to be given £55 for every person they diagnose with dementia. While I welcome steps towards improving diagnosis of dementia I despair of an approach that says money is the motivating factor in driving diagnosis in our health service. However, it is vital that people get all the advice and support they need as soon as they can. If you have concerns about dementia and would like information and support, you can: 1. Contact Carers Together who provide the dementia advisory service in Redcar and Cleveland: carerstogether.co.uk/ 2. Pop into Redcar Mind HotSpot Cafe on West Dyke Road 3. Contact the Middlesbrough Alzheimers Society office on 01642 442 030
