Four Objectives of the Training. The acquisition of: (1)Grammatical competence: to be able to recognize the lexical, morphological, syntactical, and phonological features of the language and to make use of those features to interpret and form words and sentences. Outcome:At the end of the training, you will be able to use grammar rules for the understanding, interpretation, expression, or negotiation of the literal meaning of utterances. (2)Socio-cultural competence: to know and understand the cultural rules or conventions which underlie the appropriate comprehension of language use in sociolinguistic and socio-cultural context. Outcome:At the end of the training, you will be able to anticipate with precision the socio-cultural dimension of every situation and be sensitive to the cultural meanings attached to social, professional, business, and academic life. (3)Discourse competence: to be able to understand, create, and develop forms of the language with the appropriate cohesion, coherence and rhetorical organization to combine ideas. Outcome:At the end of the training, you will be able to understand and satisfactorily achieve cohesion in form (the use of cohesion devices which help to link individual sentences and utterances to a structural whole) and coherence in meaning (the use of coherence devices which establish a logical relationship between groups of utterances). (4)Strategic competence: to be able to recall knowledge of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to compensate for breakdowns in communication. Outcome:At the end of the training, you will be able to display self-confidence, readiness to take risks, etc. in all situations of communication.
