Are you interested in reading education? Come to the Reading Institute on Monday, March 3 to learn and talk with colleagues from all over the Northwest about Connecting to the Core: Bridging Teaching Practices with Policy Demands. Register now at: octe.org/2014-nw-regional-ncte-conference.html Presenters include: Susan Lenski, Joan Kaywell, Jeremiah Franzen, Dot McElhone, and Justin Wilson Gabor Topics for the day include: Building a Case for the Books You Love: Navigating Text Complexity- The CCSS includes benchmark texts that are largely taken from the literary canon. In this workshop, you will learn how to use the CCSS text complexity guidelines to identify books that you love that fit your grade level. We will demonstrate with a popular text, and then give you support as you work on developing book lists that satisfy both you and the CCSS. Your books will be added to a website that will contain alternatives to the CCSS text exemplars. Interrogating Close Reading: How to Leverage Your Teaching Practices with the CCSS- We will look more closely at the CCSS demands for close reading and consider the kinds of teaching practices that you use that fit the standard. Then we will provide you with additional strategies to bolster your repertoire of teaching practices.
