Are you sitting comfortably? Then I shall begin: Salty the crab DID NOT like water. He did not like the way it moved. He did not like the colours. He did not like the way the light shimmered on the water’s surface. He also thought it looked very cold and very wet. Salty the crab hated water so much, he wouldn’t even wash – POOEE! - Salty also didn’t have any friends. Why was this? Because all the other creatures lived in the sea. Salty was very lonely. - One hot summer’s day, Salty was sitting sadly on the beach wishing desperately for someone to play with. When suddenly a grey shiny head appeared above the water and looked at him with two very big and very black eyes. - It was a seal! “Hello,” said the seal, “my name is Harper, would you like to play?” Salty looked sadly away and replied “I can’t come in, I hate water.” Harper could not believe his ears! “Why do you hate the water?” he asked. “Because,” Salty said, “It moves funny, it’s colours are never the same, the light makes it sparkly, it’s always cold and extremely wet.” With that, Salty began to cry. - Harper felt sorry for Salty and swam to the beach to give him a big hug. When Harper put his flipper around Salty, Salty was surprised to feel how cooling the wet flipper felt against his very hot shell and let out a big contented sigh. “Harper?” asked Salty thoughtfully, “could we just dip our toes in the shallows? I am so very hot and you feel lovely and cool from being in the water. Harper grinned and took Salty’s claw and led him carefully down to the water’s edge. Salty slowly dipped one leg into the sea. The sea moved soothingly against it – it felt wonderful! Salty edged a bit further and now the water lapped at his knees. He watched how the sea turned from blue to green and back again – it was beautiful! The sea seemed to glitter in the sunlight and suddenly Salty really wanted to see if the sea glittered below the surface. He put his whole face into the water – he couldn’t believe his eyes! There were mermaids, starfish, dolphins and a whole host of other creatures smiling at him and ready to be his friend. With a quick look at Harper, Salty pushed off into the water to be with the sea creatures. * At sunset, Salty and Harper lay on the beach watching the sun dance across the water. They were both very tired, just before Salty and Harper fell asleep, Salty murmered “I really enjoyed swimming in the sea today, the water really cooled my shell down and being wet isn’t that bad after all!”
