AreWeReadyForHer Dushi Korshu a name from which the local from this island country call their place which means sweet, good because of their rich cultural history of the people and their welcoming nature... CURAÇAO!!! Miss EARTH CURAÇAO AKISHA ALBERT Age: 19 Height: 173 cm Measurements: 35-25-35 I am very grateful that the Miss Earth pageant is giving young ladies like me the opportunity to help raise awareness on the importance of protecting our Earth. Describe your childhood growing years: I had an amazing childhood. I was always my own little world of fashion. I grew up with my mother, father and my little brother in house. We are a tight nit family. One thing that I do remember about my childhood is that I was always the tallest girl in class and I was therefore bullied. I remember feeling uncomfortable with my height but now I wish I was taller. I had a lot of friends at school and at the numerous activities I was enrolled in like dance classes, singing classes, swim classes, basketball classes. What lessons did you learn from your childhood? Through all those activities and beauty pageants I was enrolled in, Ive learned that not every time you will to win the title, but sometimes winning the title of experience is more important. Since I was twelve years old I have lived by the quote: A winner is a dreamer who never gives up. Any special facts or story about your family? I think I have the proudest parents in the world. They support me in everything I do and wherever they go usually my mother always has my portfolio with her to show everyone. My father, I call him a plant doctor. He loves his plants very much. At home he has something similar to a plant hospital. Whenever his plants need extra attention, such as more water, more vitamin or more shadow, he ensures they are taken care of. My father has lead me to develop a deep love for nature. What is the most unusual thing you have ever done? The most unusual thing that I’ve done is diving to a depth of 1000ft in a submarine. It’s one of my most incredible experiences as I got to see an entirely different dimension to the diversity of Curaçao’s underwater life. What is your most memorable moment? My most memorable moment was when I was holding hands with my best friend right before the announcement and crowning of Miss Curacao 2014. What is your environmental advocacy and why did you choose this? I chose the underwater world and coral reefs because I feel that it is important to raise awareness about the protection of reefs in Curacao. Overfishing and coastal development (and all its side effects) are foremost responsible for the local degradation of reefs around the island. On the other hand, one can still find reefs that have not changed at all for more than 50 years, or even have higher coral cover. These near-pristine reefs are found in the remote areas of the island such as the area locally known as “Oostpunt”, along the eastern side of the island or along the wave-impacted north side of the island. In short, the reefs of Curacao can be found in a variety of conditions varying from degraded to among those considered among the best in the Caribbean. Such healthy reefs provide numerous benefits to small islands like Curacao: they support all sorts of activities such as diving, fishing and swimming, but also protect the shore from storm events, generate the sand required to form natural beaches on the island and ensure good water quality so all the activities mentioned above can take place in the first place. Economists have calculated that coral reefs provide goods and services worth about $375 billion worldwide each year - a staggering figure for an ecosystem which covers less than one percent of the earths surface. What can you promote about your country? There are many things to promote on my island. Our increadibly white sand beaches, not to mention the underwater world hosting the most beautiful and healthy fish and coral reefs, our natural harbor, the swimming old lady Princess Emma bridge, and our one of a kind cousine that everybody loves. What trivia about yourself would like to share? I’m a very cheerful person. Regardless of the situation I always have a smile on my face and I always do my utmost to cheer up the people around me. I love reading and I enjoy dressing up and modeling at home for my family. missearth.tv/delegates.php
