Area bridges: Which are open, which are closed? The Mid-Bay Bridge was closed to traffic at about 9 a.m. Wednesday, becoming the latest casualty of an ice storm that blew in the night before. After much contemplation Florida Department of Transportation officials declared the Brooks Bridge in Fort Walton Beach closed at about 8:22 a.m., according to Fort Walton Beach Police official Maureen Horgan. The U.S. 331 Bridge in Walton County was also closed Wednesday morning. Destin’s Marler Bridge, which is not as steep as the Brooks Bridge, was not considered a problem, according to Okaloosa County Public Safety Director Dino Villani. Villani said any bridge closings should be considered a moot point, because with ice covering every road in the county, the smart thing for all drivers was just to stay home. “Stay off the roads,” he said. “We’ve got cars all over the place, individual incidents all over,” he said. The Antioch Road overpass over Interstate 10 was also closed to traffic, part of the “lockdown” Crestview officials declared for the city. The Garcon Point Bridge remained open in Santa Rosa County and tolls had been suspended. Drivers were being urged to move slowly through the toll plaza but not stop. Bridges into Pensacola and Pensacola Beach were closed and Interstate 10 was shut down from Holmes County to the Alabama line, Villani said. Early Wednesday was too soon to begin predicting when any or all bridges would be open. “It’s all very fluid right now,” Villani said. “We need to pray for about three or four hours of sunshine.” Contact Daily News Staff Writer Tom McLaughlin at 850-315-4435 or tmclaughlin@nwfdailynews.
