Argo is a zombie flick, or a Star Trek episode where the away team gets trapped on a planet. Enjoying the movie requires one to forget the horrors of American foreign policy in order to cheer for the good guys. A movie that presents itself as historical while making serious errors regarding the contributions of other nations demonstrates the flaws of egomania. Classic egomania can be detected by errors in how past events occurred; the egomaniac will often remember the importance of the work that they did, while diminishing the contributions of others. This movie downplays the contributions of the British, New Zealand and Canadian embassies. The movie opens with a discussion about the CIAs involvement with the Shah of Iran, but quickly introduces modern Iranians as 6th century barbaric terrorists. At least Star Trek would remind the audience about the implications of neglecting the prime directive, but Ben Affleck is obviously not concerned with a narrative that is accountable for everything that is presented in the text. As heroic as the storys star is, the opportunity to try to see some humanity in the people that chose violence against their oppressor was missed. This movie serves to inflate the fear of Al-Qaeda, by pandering to the audience. The best antidote for the poison pie of this movie is to rifftrax it.
