Ari Fleischer, press secretary for George W. Bush, used the paradoxical phrase “working vacations” in 2001 to explain the newly inaugurated presidents decision to spend 30 days in Texas less than six months after he entered office. Fleischer’s successors stuck to that script, employing the same phrase in 2005, the year that Bushs total vacation days eclipsed Ronald Reagans total for his entire presidency. (Bush eventually racked up 879, compared to Reagans 335.)
