Arkady Fomin died last night in Dallas. Arkady Fomin was a wonderful teacher and a truly generous person. He inspired many generations of musicians. His passion about music and his sense of humor were contagious. Arkady was one of the first musicians I met in the United States. He heard my performances of Bach and invited me to participate in his summer music festival in Dallas. I was 18 years old and this was the very first music festival I ever attended. Some of my most important musical and personal friendships started at that festival. This is where I met violinist Vadim Gluzman, pianist Angela Yoffe and my future husband – contrabassist Rafael DeStella. Shortly after – Arkady personally sent a cassette tape with some of my early compositions to Gidon Kremer, which resulted in me writing many works for Gidon and the Kremerata Baltica and performing with Gidon in several national and international tours, including my debut at Carnegie Hall. A few years ago, Arkady’s Clavier trio gave the American premiere of my Postscriptum for Piano Trio. We did not see each other often, but kept in touch throughout all these years and I knew that I could always call him for advise. Arkady’s inner-light generously shined on everyone whose lives he touched. He believed in the power of music and he believed in young people and did everything he could to help them. He will be deeply missed.
