Arlene Blair passed this morning. For decades, she has been one of my heroes. Of the old-line Holiness bloodline, she never compromised on her convictions, yet graciously lived them out around those who never shared her views. For those decades, she has been a backbone of the Paintsville, KY church, if not the thread that has kept the church going through some tough times. I have had only a very few people I respected more than she. She has touched me as few have. Friends have come and gone, but she remained, only because her relationship with you was based on her character, not on something fleeting. One such instance, I took Heidi along for a trip. I think she was about 8 or so and Arlene slipped her a $5 bill. That moved me to I began to do that with kids I thought would never have $5 of their own. Then, having spent a few moments with her crazy girls (fun loving,) I learned she was a fun person. One such instance came when a daughter asked me to ask Arlene about her music video. Yes, she had the top-selling country music video in all of Europe. Well, more-less. It seems, Stella Parton, Dollys sister, is a professing believer. As her charity of choice, she chose the Christian Appalachian Project, a Habitat for Humanity type program for the poor in Appalachian. They chose Arlenes cabin to replace and Stella did a music video at the cabin, which included an interview of Arlene. It couldnt have happened to a better person on Earth and we were all happy for her. Possibly a large change in her physical time-line came when she broke her hip. But before long, she was climbing the 25 steps up to her apartment. At the last, the devil may have though he had her down, then God came and took her up.
