Army Deploys Heavily in Mt Elgon The army has beefed up deployment at Mt Elgon National Park after suspected militants killed two rangers in heavy gun battles. The rangers were gunned down in the raids whose aim, according to UWA officials, was to steal riffles. UWA Managing Director Mr Andrew Seguya told journalists in Kampala that in the first attack at Kamkwayo camp in Mt Elgon, one ranger was killed on the spot. Elgon Regional Internal Security Officer, Capt. Richard Okoth told press that heavily-armed soldiers from the Infantry Brigade of the 3rd Division in Bugema, Mbale had been deployed in the park to secure the tourism attraction centre. Sources revealed that security fear the role of possible rebels in the region. ADF has been recruiting combatants in eastern Uganda, according to army officials.Sseguya also cautioned that government would not watch on the sidelines as lives of innocent rangers get wiped by the criminal gangs. If not contained quickly, the attacks in Elgon could hurt Uganda’s tourism sector. The Central Bank recently revealed in its monetary policy statement that tourism had for the first time become Uganda’s biggest export earner after fetching $1.4bn in financial year 2013/2014, up from $1.1bn the year before.
