Army Salutes people of Budgam for helping in 1947 war against Tribals pays tribute to Major Somnath Budgam, Nov 3: Saluting the people of Budgam for helping Indian Army in 1947 war against Tribals, General Commanding Officer Victor Force, Major General R.R.Nimborkar Sunday said that it were brave people of Budgam who helped India to repulse the tribal invasion. R.R.Nimborkar honoured the two persons of Budgam with awards on Sunday who according to Army played a key role in repulsing the tribal invasion in 1947. According to reports, a function was held in Budgam in which rich tributes were paid to first Param Vir Chakara awardee Major Somnath Sharam who according to Army defeated the tribal with the help of local population of Budgam in 1947. “Major Somnath was the head of a company comprised of 100 odd Army personnel while the number of ‘invaders’ were at least 7,000. People of Budgam came to rescue for Indian Army and repulsed the tribal invaders. Major Somnath was killed in the attack and he was awarded Param Vir Chakara posthumously,” Nimborkar told reporters. Nimborkar said that invaders motive to capture Srinagar Air Field was foiled by the civilians of Budgam and we owe a lot to them. He honoured the two surviving civilians of Budgam on the occasion. Despite repeated attempts, one of the survivors Miraz Ahmed who helped Indian Army in 1947 refused to talk to CNS about the incident. “I will not tell you anything and don’t ask me anything,” Mirza of Budgam said.
