Around 10 years ago I went to an Aesop Rock show at a place called the Eclectic House at Wesleyan University where my brother was a student. I remember the show being very hype & Aes killing it in a small, hazardously packed room. I also remember a freestyle session that happened with a group of friends outside. Although Im far from a good freestyler,I had a particularly open moment that evening and was just spewing words from my mouth at high speed. This unknown kid came into the cypher and started claiming that I wasnt freestyling because it was too fast. This turned into nearly an hour of intense battling and - since there were no judges - we were both convinced that we were winners. As the crowd surrounding us dissipated, my brother, who had been watching from the sidelines, jumped in out of nowhere and started yelling in Spanish about how the other guy didnt know how to speak Spanish. It was pretty embarrassing because the guy came back with a flurry of Spanish raps and said that he came straight from THE island, La Isla (Puerto Rico). At the end of the impromptu battle the rapper finally gave me props for obviously being a legitimate freestyler but....he couldnt do the same for my little brother. That rapper turned out to be Big Pun. Well.... not really....Big Pun died in the year 2000 but....the rest of that stuff happened and.... 10 years later Im opening for Aesop Rock & Kimya Dawson at The Space in Hamden, CT on Monday April 28th.
