Arsenal are chasing the wrong La Liga striker Posted on June 14, 2013 by dereks As all Arsenal fans will know, the club are currently chasing Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain to bring some firepower to the club that Olivier Giroud failed to provide last season. Most fans are happy at the prospect of Higuain playing for the club and they should be because he is a good striker who can score 30 goals a season when he gets regular game time but this article is not about him. I believe Arsenal’s first target should have been Valencia’s Roberto Soldado. Soldado plays for Valenica and is the captain of the club whenever David Albelda is not playing which is often because of his age and fitness problems. The fact that he is the captain and the leading striker at the club means that Arsenal would probably have to pay more for him than they will for Higuain. If Arsenal are going to live up to their promise of spending big this summer, Soldado could have been a great player to start the spending with. Last season he scored 24 goals in the league and was one of the best players in Spain all season which may also drive up the price, but Arsenal could bring in a prolific striker with qualities that some players just do not have. Back to the fact that he is the captain of Valencia, that means that he has leadership skills which is very rare in strikers and would be a useful trait to have at Arsenal. He has been an extremely prolific striker for the last four years and has scored in nearly half the games he has played for Valencia. One of the main criticisms at Arsenal in the last few seasons was the lack of a leader which seems to have calmed down more recently but Soldado could bring leadership to the attacking players and inspire them to create more chances when things aren’t going their way. I also believe that from watching both Higuain and Soldado play, Soldado seems to have a much higher work rate and likes to help out his team in whatever way he can. At Arsenal that would be useful because we have players like Theo Walcott and Lukas Podolski who could move into the central position if Soldado roams out of position to help out elsewhere. Soldado would have been my personal choice for a new striker at Arsenal but Gonzalo Higuain can still produce magic up front to take the club back to the next level. If a deal for Higuain doesn’t work out though, Arsene Wenger should look to Soldado. ***Leave all your new Tottenham Jokes here! They’d all improve our squad greatly. But let’s be realistic, we probably won’t end up with any players of this quality, note and price. Maybe Villa because he’ll be cheaper.
