Arsenal are willing to take a back-seat in the race for Francesc - TopicsExpress

Arsenal are willing to take a back-seat in the race for Francesc Fabregas, and could allow Manchester United to take pole position, as he doesn’t rank amongst their transfer priorities for the summer. The Telegraph claims that Arsene Wenger is keen to ensure that he lands a new striker and another holding midfielder before considering other options, and so any interest in engineering an emotional return for Fabregas has taken a back-seat. The former Arsenal captain is reportedly up for sale at the Nou Camp as Barcelona look to recoup money from the purchase of Neymar and lucrative contract extension handed down to Lionel Messi, and a number of clubs have already registered their interests. Interestingly United rank highly amongst the list of potential suitors, and rumours this morning indicate that new Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal sits at the opposite end of the spectrum to Wenger in that he has made the capture of Fabregas his first port of call. With previous reports suggesting that the Red Devils will be willing to pay up to €55million to force Barca’s hand, Arsenal fans have every right to be concerned. Of course it’s not all doom and gloom, as the Gunners do have a first-refusal option in place, which was embedded into the deal which originally saw Fabregas return to Spain in 2011. The clause means that Wenger will be given the chance to try to land his ex-captain should another team make an official approach, and the Telegraph adds that the Frenchman will consider doing so if another Premier League attempts a purchase.
