Arsenal could replace Vermaelen with another Ajax star The current Arsenal captain, Thomas Vermaelen, was just 24-years old when he signed on for the Gunners, but he had already spent six seasons with Ajax in the Dutch Eredivisie, notching up 130 appearances for the club and becoming captain in his final season. Ajax, currently managed by Frank de Boer with Dennis Berkamp as his assistant, have a great reputation for developing young players, so it is no surprise that Arsene Wenger and Arsenal keep an eye on their up and coming talent, especially with the Bergkamp connection. It does seem, according to the media, that Arsenal are going to lose our captain at the end of the season, though, as he is not happy with the lack of games at the Emirates. Despite a few chances, Vermaelen has not been able to break the centre back pairing of Mertesacker and Koscielny, and he is not willing to spend most of his time on the bench. His replacement, should the Belgian leave, could also be a product of the Ajax academy, according to a Metro report. 22-year old Joel Veltman has made the transition to the first team, been a stalwart of the Dutch underage international teams and his impressive performances with Ajax this season have led to his full debut with the Netherlands under Louis van Gaal. If Arsenal are to sign the young centre back, we will have to compete with our north London rivals Tottenham, but competing with the spuds has been fun this season and beating them to Veltman would make it four out of four for the Arsenal.
