Arsene Wenger on Arsenals Chelsea hammering: An accident happened - that doesn’t mean you’re not a good driver Mar 24, 2014 22:30 By John Cross Share Share Tweet +1 Email No rational explanation for Gunners latest battering by a title-race rival claims their manager ahead of Tuesday home clash with Swansea Action Images Road to nowhere? Wenger and Arsenal are title picture outsiders after Chelsea defeat Arsene Wenger says Arsenal’s humiliation at Chelsea was like a car crash – but insists he is still a good driver. And the Gunners boss also agreed with defender Per Mertesacker by blaming the lunchtime kick-off for their six-goal thrashing after they took similar beatings at Manchester City and Liverpool in the same TV slot. Arsenal have shipped 17 goals in three away games against their title-race rivals and Wenger said: “The common thing was that it was a 12.45 game and twice we were caught at the start of the game. “At the moment, there’s no rational explanation other than the quality of our opponents and that we were caught at the start of the game. Why? We don’t really know.” But Wenger is confident that his players will respond to their Stamford Bridge battering at home against Swansea on Tuesday. He said: “An accident has happened, that doesn’t mean that you’re not a good driver. It just means that we have played about 40 games this season and it’s not what happened on Saturday that reflects the quality of this team. “We have 62 points that we earned hard with quality games and that’s what we want to focus on, to get back to that quality. “You have to put that into perspective, we just came out of two convincing results at Bayern Munich and at Tottenham with very solid defensive performances so you have to think that was an accident. “How do you deal with the accident? You repair them, you repair the damage and you go for the next one.” Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta went even further than Wenger in apologising to the fans after admitting they were “embarrassed” by the Chelsea defeat. He said: “I don’t know what else to say apart from sorry to everyone at the club, the fans, and we promise that we will try hard to put that right. It hurts deeply inside. It was embarrassing.” mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/arsene-wenger-arsenals-chelsea-hammering-3279128#ixzz2wxPkr5yI Follow us: @DailyMirror on Twitter | DailyMirror on Facebook
