Arson attack during strike kill four in Bangladesh Dhaka (dpa) - At least four people were killed and dozen burned when activists threw petrol bombs on a bus in northern Bangladesh during a strike called by the political opposition Wednesday, police said. Officer Rabiul Islam said rescuers found the charred bodies of four passengers, including a child, after the Dhaka-bound bus came under attack Rangpur district, about 250 kilometers north-west of Dhaka. Twelve people with severe burn injuries were taken to hospital, most of them in critical condition, he said. A survivor told private broadcaster Channel 24 that she saw a flame entering into the bus behind the drivers seat at around 2:30 am and it soon engulfed the entire bus. Police arrested eight activists of Jamaat-e-Islami, an Islamist ally of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), on suspicion of carrying out the attack. Violence in different parts of Bangladesh left at least 11 people dead after BNP chief and former prime minister Khalida Zia announced the indefinite blockade of roads, railways and waterways on January 5. Zia is demanding a new election under a non-partisan caretaker administration. The Awami League government has ruled out any possibility of an early election.
