Art and Economics at Glass Secessionism and in Chicago During - TopicsExpress

Art and Economics at Glass Secessionism and in Chicago During SOFA Chicago I could not resist a pilgrimage to the new (renovated and modified from an earlier structure) Economics department building at the University of Chicago. This department has won 28 Nobel Memorial prizes and is responsible for the Chicago School of Economics and the Law and Economics movement. In my opinion, the Art and Economics movement owes much to the Chicago School, too, as does the economics approach to art being developed within Glass Secessionism. So I was pleasantly surprised to see the sophisticated ways in which the Chicago building uses light and glass and integrates the two into the architecture of the building, as shown in my attached images. There is a great deal of drama established through the use of contrasting very dark and very bright spaces. The final shot is of the new all glass reading room at the library at Chicago, also a lovely structure in the way it is dramatically lit at night. Economics at GS GS doesnt have a building, but we have been criticized for our focus on art and, well, um, lets say it: art and money. In response today, lets quote from a prominent member of the Chicago Economics department, the late Milton Friedman: One of the great mistakes is to judge policies and programs by their intentions rather than their results. —Milton Friedman Interview with Richard Heffner on The Open Mind (7 December 1975) So critics of GS and our approach to money, please consider not only what we post here, but what happens on the ground at the art expos and in the galleries, and especially in how artists can use a good understanding of economics in developing their careers. We do not claim to teach economics at GS, we only want to provide a civil platform for an intense and open discussion about art and money. There, I said it!
