Artemiev was born in Novosibirsk and has studied at the Moscow Conservatory under the guidance of Yuri Shaporin. His interest in electronic music and synthesizers began after graduating in 1960. Wrote his first composition in 1967 with one of the first synthesizers, the ANS synthesizer developed by engineer Evgeny Murzin Soviet. It was thus one of the first pioneers of electronic music and composers. His collaboration with director Andrei Tarkovsky in 1970 has made it well known. He wrote the soundtracks of the films of Tarkovsky including Solaris and Stalker. Later he also wrote film soundtracks for Andrei Konchalovsky and Nikita Mikhalkov.
