Article Exerpt: "So far so good About 16,500 visitors, including about 1,500 around the Fourth of July, have taken the cave tour. The two declined to disclose the company’s revenue, but Houchens said it has been about 30 percent higher than projected. Some tourist caves have unique geological formations, some have underground waterways and boat rides, and others boast ancient bones. Indiana Caverns has all of the above, the two pointed out. Houchens said the boat ride is the most commented-on aspect of the cave tour. During the weekends, electric-powered boats leave underground docks packed full of tourists, said Roberson. Open year-round Indiana Caverns is winding down its opening peak season. But Houchens and Roberson hope to keep up their momentum during the autumn and winter months. Many families take fall vacations these days because more schools have a fall break, Houchens said. And the destination makes sense in the winter months, he said, because the cave’s temperature stays around 57 degrees year-round. That makes it a relatively warm get away during that time of year, he said. Another plus, Houchens said, is that the cave is only about 28 miles from downtown Louisville. “We’re not that far away.”
