Articles are circulating on FB about the mass abduction of young girls in Nigeria by an armed Islamic fundamentalist group named Boko Haram. Everyone should be up in arms--if the story is true or even partially true. But there is here the strong whiff of deceit & manipulation. Recently I posted on the corruption of the Nigerian government & military in facilitating plunder in the Niger Delta by Shell Petroleum. Its as inadvisable to take their word as it is to trust the US government or the New York Times without careful investigation. Ive previously been accused of trying to cover up the dark side of Islamic fundamentalism; Ive even been denounced for it (though FB denunciations come cheap). But for those who want social transformation, its necessary to understand what is actually going on in the world, even if its ugly, & to investigate what smells fishy or cannot be substantiated. If there is one thing likely to be etched on my tombstone, it is She went to her grave still flailing media lies, or the alternative, She never met a media source she didnt vet. So please dont post stories about the Nigerian abductions on my FB wall until a sufficient investigation is completed. Let me say now that Half the Sky, the foundation run by Nicholas Kristof of the NYTimes, is not a reliable source for information.
