Artist Blacksmith students visited the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, viewing various metal pieces that inspired them to think critically and creatively. Student Daniel Wright shared his thoughts and photos from the experience. “Seeing the incredible chisel work on virtually everything that was presented was staggering,” writes Daniel. “The absolute precision of the work tells me that the artist put untold hours in simply designing it on paper.” Daniel was continuously impressed with the time, care and effort that went into creating armor. “Hard to believe the lengths people went in shaping metal,” he said. “Wearing this amount of weight for hours or days – probably weeks – seems insane, but I suppose the preservation of life is as worthy a cause as any.” One piece that particularly inspired the Haliburton School of The Arts’ student was #38, as it made him curious as to how the artist created it. “Although not really anything that could be made in Blacksmithing, the craftsman who made this obviously has a very good understanding of the materials they use,” he wrote. “Was the shell dipped into hot metal? Was something applied to the shell to make the metal stick? Did it function? Too many questions over a single piece of work that is so simple. This is the sort of thing that I want to make; things that make people ask questions.” Learn more about the Artist Blacksmith program: flemingcollege.ca/programs/artist-blacksmith
