Artist Challenge, day 2 of 5 (nominated by Margot Rogers): Continuing in chronological order, here are pieces from 2002, 2003 and 2005. For many years, as I figured out what aspects of artmaking were most important to me, I kept lots of scraps of wood, metal, cloth and etc. around for making built paintings, alongside those made with actual paint. (See captions for details.) A friend and fellow student at MassArt told me once, after a difficult critique, that I probably shouldve been a sculptor. It was a frustrating thought -- as I was in the middle of earning a Painting degree -- but her comment nailed my concern with the physical stuff of painting. Ive generally avoided image-making and depiction, preferring to make actual objects from actual materials in actual space. We all share the (fun, weird, occasionally grievous) condition of being an infinite consciousness anchored to reality by a physical body, and thats always been a valuable starting point for my work.
