Artist’s Statement –– “Angular” “This is one of those paintings which take surprising turns — surprising and gratifying. ‘Angular’ was begun with the intention of its being the summing up of my ‘Specula’ series. It was to have a scattering of bright areas of color throughout its generous expanse of canvas and was to be non-hierarchical. Though most of my intentions were realized, the color areas eventually vanished, leaving, in prominence, the dark, angular brackets which had embraced them–– and leaving the artist determined to try again, on another canvas to close out the ‘Specula’ series.” ––Paul Maxwell
