Arunachal Sounds Red Alert over Impending Disaster The Arunachal Pradesh government sounded a red alert following report of a massive landslide that blocked the flow of Polo river at Polosang a week ago, on the upper riches of the Himalayas and reversing the flow of the water towards China after creating a huge lake that could leave a trail of devastation if breached. Polo is the major tributary of Kurung River in Sarli circle of remote Kurung Kumey district in Arunachal Pradesh. In the event of breach of the artificial blockade the flooding water could cause cascading effect downstream and the possibility of washing away the log and wire rope suspension bridges used as a lifeline by the ITBP, SIB and SSB personnel for border patrolling along China besides badly hitting villages and the inhabitants. Chief Secretary Hari Krishna Paliwal and disaster management secretary Kapa Kholie alerted disaster management director YW Ringu, who passed on the message to Kurung Kumey DC and SP to take steps to evacuate the people living in flood–prone lower belt along Kurung river to safer places to avoid loss of life and property, official sources informed. The villages downstream with approximate population are Waru (200), Kapu (150), Sharma (200), Chula (100), Palo (60), Wabia (200) and Sarli town with a population of 1,200. Kurung Kumey Zilla Parishad chairperson Sangha Tagik informed that the drying up of the river bed had killed the aquatic animals, including fish species, which could cause epidemic. Muddy water has started dripping from the upper level since yesterday which indicated a breach, he apprehended.
