As 2014 comes to a close, let me tell you whats important in life-- passion and memories. I started playing piano in the mid 70s and Ive loved Billy Joel and his music since almost that same time. My brother Don introduced me to Billys biggest album, The Stranger. My friend Jim, played me Angry Young Man from Turnstiles. Thats when I learned Billy had albums before The Stranger. My mom was nice enough to drive all over Louisville every time Billy released another new LP and/or the coinciding sheet music. I played Billys music on my stereo and on the piano for hours and hours, just ask my sister Suzy or my kids. It never occurred to me when I first saw Billy Joel perform in UKs Rupp Arena in 1980 that I would still be able to enjoy his music live 34 years later, but here we are. I saw Billy twice this year, in Cleveland back in April and earlier this month in Pennsylvania. I am passionate about his music and it has given me many memories. You need to have something in your life, be it a person or anything else, that your passionate about. Something that you feel strongly about, that you really have no control over. You just love it and you cant stop. Its not enough though to just love something. You have to get out there and be one with it. Spend time with that person youre passionate about, get down in the dirt you love and garden, turn up the speakers and listen to music that is special to you. Do something with your passion. Make a memory! They may not all be good, but at least youre trying. Most importantly please, please dont die saying, I wish I had... Lets say one of your passions is San Francisco, CA. Fine. Download information about that place. Buy books about the city by the bay. Put up posters in your home of that area. Watch Sean Connery in The Rock. Save your money and GO THERE! Aaron and I drove to Cleveland to see Billy Joel in April. Below is a video I filmed at that concert. I saw Billy for the second time in 2014 earlier this month in Pennsylvania. People have asked me, You drove all the way there just for a concert!?! No, Ive tried to explain. I drove there to feed my passion, to make another memory, to live a life. Happy New Year.
