As Burning Man ticket sales begin, so does the annual - TopicsExpress

As Burning Man ticket sales begin, so does the annual hand-wringing about how things are not like they used to be. To thwart those tendencies, heres a video from the informed, informative, and always entertaining Brian Doherty on the fact that Burning Man has not changed a bit in the last 15 years. To give away the ending: If youre trying to do something in the world, do not listen to bored people. Its the sort of paradox of people who complain that Burning Man has changed. First of all, if youre able to say that, that means youve been doing it for a long time. And if youve been doing it for a long time, then obviously *youve* changed, and also obviously, youre inserting yourself into an experience that feels transformative the first few times, as its meant to, but also it kind of is the same. It is a ritual, and it is a holiday, and it looks the same and feels the same and its in the same place. To me, its like, remember how Christmas felt when you were six? Then remember how Christmas felt when you sixteen? And then, goodness sake, how it felt when you were twenty six? If youre convinced that its gotten awful or boring, Im not saying youve become boring and awful, but just consider that maybe its time for you to step out of the experience rather than tell other people its not good anymore.
