As Cadets prepare for the upcoming Pacific Region Biathlon Cadet - TopicsExpress

As Cadets prepare for the upcoming Pacific Region Biathlon Cadet Zones 4 & 5 Biathlon Competition on January 10th, 2015, three Cadets from 861 RCAC Squadron proudly came home with some Gold and Silver hardware after competing at Biathlon BC Cup #1 in Quesnel last weekend. FSgt Jarod Algra won Gold in the Youth Men 12.5km Individual competition with a final time of 41:52 shooting 17 of 20 targets. He was 10 minutes faster than his closest competitor! Cdt Ethan Algra and Cdt Emmanuel Bussani competed in the Junior Boys category. Cdt Algra won Gold in the 6km Individual competition with a final time of 25:44, shooting 13 out of 15. Cdt Bussani placed 4th in the same race with a final time of 35:16, shooting 4 out of 15 targets. The following day, both Cdts Algra and Bussani won medals. Cdt Algra brought home Gold in the 4.5km Sprint, finishing the race in 19:21, hitting 7 out of 10 targets. Cdt Bussani won Silver in the same race, finishing race in 23:49, hitting 1 out of 10 targets. In the 7.5km Sprint competition, FSgt Algra won Gold, finishing the race in 25:50 and hitting 8 out of 10 targets. FSgt Algra has competed in the last 4 Cadet Zone Competition and has 4 Gold medals to show for it. But this year he will be cheering on his squadron instead of competing. This is because he will be competing at the Canada Winter Games (CWG) the same weekend as Cadet Provincials. FSgt Algra figured that since he couldnt attend Cadet Provincials, it would be better to step aside for the Zone Competion and allow another team mate from his squadron to have the opportunity to compete. It will be Cdt Algra and Cdt Bussanis first zone competition and they look forward to continuing on with 861 Squadrons competitive history. 861 squadron had such overwhelming participation in the Biathlon Program that they saw between 27 to 32 cadets show up every Thursday night for land training from October to December. So to only have 9 cadets compete from each squadron at Zones, it was an easy decision for FSgt Algra to step aside. FSgt Algra competed at the Canada Winter Games selection races in Canmore in the beginning of December and was the fastest BC male athlete in his category. The Canada Winter Games occurs once every four years. British Columbia is allowed to send a team of 8 Biathlon athletes (4 Men and 4 Women). The ages of the athletes ranges from 17 to 20 years old. Algra is well aware that he will be competing against older, more experienced, and the very best biathletes across the country but hes very excited for the opportunity as CWG only comes every 4 years, it really is a once in a life time experience.
