As Chief Engineer, I always try to save Radio Lonsdale money when we are upgrading or expanding our studio capabilities. However having almost 30 years electrical & electronic engineering experience there are certain things that I will never economise on, usually involving safety aspects of an installation! I am constantly boring our members when I nag at them about not using unbalanced audio signals unless absolutely necessary and I hate using jack plugs (6.35 or 3.5mm TR & TRS plugs to give them their proper name) as XLR and Speakon plugs and sockets are far superior! Take a look at this short video which demonstrates why I always insist on Oxygen Free Copper (OFC) cables for RL use and will not buy the much cheaper but awful Copper Clad Aluminium (CCA) cable! https://youtube/watch?v=bcePF48bwbk A 1.5 Volt or 100 Watt loss over a length of just 12 feet! Imagine the power loss on one of our long audio cables used for the Keswick to Barrow Walk! Please note that this cheap and nasty CCA cable is often used for cheap RJ45 patch and telephone cable! If it looks too good to be true - it is! Many cheap patch cables look good and are marked as Cat5e or Cat6 but often are NOT! Usually the cores are hardly twisted, if at all, and often contain CCA or just plain Aluminium cores! If in doubt ask!
