As I have looked back to what life was like before cancer, its clouded memories. What creeps in like fog are the reminders of cancer. To think life was crazy before, imagine how crazy it became during. Dave and Nicole were in middle school. That in itself- two middle schoolers at the same time is crazy. Plus Daniel in 5th grade and Nate being in his second year of high school had his own crowd established. Yet the fog just brings the swirling winds of a storm that is beyond crazy. I oftend am reminded of what Nate initially thought. I remember sitting in the doctors office where they would attempt the initial biopsy. It was after the x-ray and MRI where the knee doc just looked and said, I am sorry. The downpour of sorry for what? What are you saying? Hearing a doctor say I am sorry is the crack of thunder in a silent sky. Maybe I am reminded of what Nate didnt think. He didnt think to cry, to get upset, to obsess in a pity party. He thought or asked What do I do now?- His first questions were not about what to expect, how much would it hurt, what does this or that mean. He just wanted to know what he had to do in order to play baseball. He wanted a game plan. The initial biopsy was not with the oncologist. It was at the limb preservation doctors office. It was inconclusive that day so they had to re-schedule for an inpatient biopsy. Yet the drizzle of intial determination set in. What was our crazy life became our insane life. Baseball continued to be the eye of the storm and although lightning did strike, the game continued to be played.
