As I have mentioned in some of my talks, it is an open secret in publishing that boys tend to read books about boys written by men (and there are many to choose from), but when boys do read stories by women, they often (initially) dont know it, as with JK Rowling and Harry Potter, or How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell. In these fantastic books, the main characters are boys. Girls read books about girls, but they are also naturally exposed to a large number of stories about boys. So how do we afford boys the same cross-section, reading stories about girls adventures and boys adventures? Stories by women as well as men? And does it matter? (I think it does) Here is Aviva Tuffield on the issue: I would argue that a number of structural and institutional factors play into these reading habits – and that these patterns are established very early on. theage.au/comment/female-authors-help-broaden-mens-horizons-20140922-10k5x4.html
