As I read everyones Veterans Day thoughts, I am reminded of visiting the Normandy coast in 1978 while living in France. I remember going to Pointe du Hoc and walking into the ever-present German bunkers. I remember traversing the pock-marked terrain made rough by Allied shelling. The taking of Pointe du Hoc was such an amazing feat for the Allied troops with its sheer cliffs they had to scale with the German guns firing down on them. I remember seeing the hulks of the various landing crafts that were still visible in the surf. If ever you have the chance, be sure to visit the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach. Its such a spiritually beautiful place. I spent most of my time there sitting and just reading the 1557 names listed on the Wall of the Missing.
