As I see it, the kernel of the case brought before the jury can be stated succinctly: was Zimmerman acting in self defense at the time he pulled the trigger. All else is peripheral, like, should he have remained in the car as the police advised and not followed Martin? Decisions Zimmerman made before the altercations may have been poor judgments, but they were not themselves criminal. For a conviction, it was necessary for the prosecution to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Zimmerman was not acting in self defense, a difficult task considering that Zimmerman had cuts on the back of his head and a damaged nose.
