As I sit out here in the Porter Ridge parking lot while my son and so much of the high school and our community light candles to honor Sami Windham, I am overwhelmed with so much emotion. Firstly for her parents who are experiencing such an unimaginable grief right now...one that no parent should ever have to know. My heart hurts so deeply for them...I cant even put it into words. But these poor kids - who so many of have never experienced a death of a friend, classmate or peer....these are our babies having to learn how to deal with a pain and emotions that are beyond their comprehension. Tonight there are no cliques, groups, labels or prejudices. Tonight they are a unit - a family - all loving and comforting each other as they honor and say goodbye to their friend that they lost way too soon. They are still so young but are having to be so grown up as they are really facing their mortality for the first time. We cannot make this better or take away the grief so many are feeling but we can honor her name by making it our mission to keep the rest of these kids safe....to drill it in their heads to always wear their seatbelts and to stay focused on the road. Even if theyre running late or going to miss curfew - just teach them to pull over, call us and let us know...and have them take their precious time. Because it is SO precious. Hug your kids tonight.... Dont sweat the small stuff.... And say an extra prayer for her family and this community thats dealing with such a tragic loss.
