As I was leaving a building I visited today, the young security guard and a much older manong pushing a kariton were discussing quite loudly. Then the Manong with a kariton called me: Ser, di ba kapag ang bandila nasa flagpole, yung bughaw ang nasa taas? I said yes. Then the Manong told the young security guard: kita mo na, sabi ko sayo eh! Sa Araling Panlipunan ko natutunan yan eh! Kapag pula sa taas, may giyera! Manong was laughing as he helped the security guard bring down the flag from the pole and change the flags position, with the blue field on top. I was smiling as I left. Manong -- now pushing a kariton -- proudly showed the security guard that he remembers something from his schooling. On the other hand, I was thinking about the guard and if Araling Panlipunan is a critical part of the education needed by people we entrust guns with. K-12 nga kaya ang makakalunas sa problema natin sa edukasyon? Sana naman.
