As I was out in the yard working, I remember a time when I was in Basic at Ft Leonardwood during the 4th of July. This particular day we were going on the fire range for live Grenade practice. Now we go into a pit with a small brick wall between us and where we threw the grenade. In the pit was a trainee and a Drill Sgt. Drill Sgt Harvey gave us speech prior to going into the pit. First he said there are no John Wayne in the pit. Do not count to 3. Pull the $#@^&$# pin and throw the damn grenade. He also said if we drop the grenade he would throw us on the grenade. He said he would go to Washington and make sure we got the medal of Honor, but he said" I have done 3 tours in Vietnam and not going be wasted cause some #&%@*&^ trainee drop a grenade. It was speech that made a big impact on me. I went to the pit, grab the grenade and threw it as far as I could and got down! Good job, Drill Sgt Harvey!
